Welcome to the Network Goods Blog
Emerging from the ambitious and forward-thinking ecosystem of Protocol Labs, the Network Goods team has embarked on a mission to engineer tools and opportunities for revolutionary coordination systems. We believe that new coordination systems are needed to overcome nearly all of the important problems facing humanity, and seek to build systems to address those problems. Rather than presume to know solutions, we want to make progress toward a world where communities of any size have the tools and systems to quickly identify and achieve shared goals.
Understanding Network Goods: Network goods are defined as goods that experience a network effect. Whether these are networks tied together with social bonds or datastreams, communities connected by geography or by the internet, we can identify groups of individuals. These groups, be they communities, corporations, unions, governments, or DAOs share goals, create public goods/commons, and rely on infrastructure. These goods, such as digital infrastructure and open-source software, possess immense value within the context of a network. However, their unique nature poses challenges when it comes to generating immediate revenue without compromising the essence of the goods themselves.
Revolutionizing Coordination Systems: When we talk about coordination systems, we refer to the amalgamation of technology, knowledge, and habits that underlie successful movements throughout history. From time zones to the metric system, the internet to impactful social movements, these systems have reshaped societies and empowered individuals. At Network Goods, we aim to build new and innovative coordination systems that empower all individuals and communities to achieve their goals.
The Birth of Network Goods: To address this critical need, the Network Goods team emerged from what was formerly known as PL Research within Protocol Labs. Equipped with our experience in building fundamental web3 infrastructure and deploying programs to fund cutting-edge research, we recognized the urgent requirement for better tools to support the creation and nurturing of network goods, like research and the open-source software infrastructure of the internet.
Funding Non-Excludable Goods: One of our primary focuses lies in funding non-excludable goods, such as public goods, commons, knowledge, and digital infrastructure. We believe these areas have historically been under-supported and underfunded, not due to a lack of willingness to contribute but rather the inconvenience and lack of visible impact in doing so. By addressing this gap, we aim to secure the future of the internet, where all aspects of life increasingly reside, by fostering sustainable funding models for these vital goods.
Our Approach: We carry ideas from the initial posing of a question to deploying a useful tool. We follow Protocol Labs’ Permissive License Stack, and while we hope customers will pay us, we’re looking for positive impact in the world first.
Join Us: While our team may be small, we’re always welcoming new collaborators and users. If you share our passion for empowering networks of people and building a brighter, shared future, and if any of our projects excite you, we’d love to connect. Please email us at network-goods@protocol.ai or feel free to reach out to any specific project!
We are actively seeking collaborators, supporters, and users of funding mechanisms. If you'd like to get involved in a Network Goods project or are interested in supporting our mission, please contact us.
